Train lines, like all transport infrastructure, must undergo regular technical inspections. The first maintenance works planned for 2022 will take place next Sunday in the Pusteria/Pustertal valley.
Several times a year – typically on a Sunday morning – the rail network operator RFI carries out technical checks and inspections on all train lines between Bolzano/Bozen and Merano/Meran and along those serving the Pusteria/Pustertal valley. As a consequence, the tracks need to remain closed for a few hours during those days. The checks are primarily aimed at examining the safety systems and the overhead lines, but the closure is also used to carry out minor maintenance work on the railway infrastructure.
Along the main railway line to and from Brennero/Brenner, on the other hand, there will be a small daily “window” the mornings, where rail traffic will be restricted for necessary inspection and maintenance work. In contrast to train lines managed locally, for instance the STA-run Venosta/Vinschgau valley railway service, the Brennero/Brenner railway line cannot be closed for inspection and maintenance work during the night time due to heavy freight traffic.
Sunday: maintenance work in the Pusteria/Pustertal valley
This year’s first planned maintenance works are scheduled for Sunday 16 January and will see tracks in the Pusteria/Pustertal valley closed for half a day:
- Fortezza/Franzensfeste – San Candido/Innichen: 6:30-13:30
- San Candido/Innichen – state border: 9:00-12:00
All trains will be suspended and rail replacement services will be provided, with hourly services connecting San Candido/Innichen with Sillian and most buses running every 30 minutes between Fortezza/Franzensfeste and San Candido/Innichen. Regular services will resume later that day, with the first trains scheduled to depart from Fortezza/Franzensfeste and San Candido/Innichen at 13:50.
More planned maintenance in 2022
This year, planned maintenance works are earmarked for those months in which the overall traffic volume and passenger numbers are typically lower. Track closures in the Pusteria/Pustertal valley are scheduled for the following Sundays: 16 January, 20 March, 15 May, 17 July, 18 September and 20 November 2022. Train services between Bolzano/Bozen and Merano/Meran are scheduled for inspection works lasting a few hours on 13 February and 9 October, plus two short interruptions on 10 April and 18 December 2022.
