San Candido/Innichen and back: a convenient, eco-friendly way to go on holiday.
No traffic jams, no changing trains and a considerable contribution to saving the environment: From 17 February, the “treno della neve” or snow train will take winter sports fans from Rome, Verona or Rovereto directly to South Tyrol. A Trenitalia service, the snow-bound Intercity train will run on Fridays and Saturdays until 8 April 2023. South Tyrol Mobility Minister Daniel Alfreider: “This means that holidaymakers and excursionists can now go completely car-free and travel in an environmentally responsible way.” In tourism in particular, he added, there is still an important need to focus even more on accessibility by bus and train.
In a 2022 survey, the economic service provider IDM found that half of a total 4750 people interviewed could see themselves travelling by more sustainable means in the future. “That’s exactly where we need to come in: increase our cooperation across borders to create ever more environmentally sound ways to arrive at your holiday destination, but also for more clean mobility during your break,” Alfreider concluded.
Departure times
On Friday and Saturday night, the “overnight snow express” leaves Roma Termini at 22:05. In South Tyrol, it stops in Bolzano/Bozen, Bressanone/Brixen, Fortezza/Franzensfeste, Brunico/Bruneck and Dobbiaco/Toblach, before finally arriving in San Candido/Innichen at 8:30 in the morning. On Saturday and Sunday evenings, the service runs in the opposite direction, departing from San Candido/Innichen at 19:18 and arriving in Rome at 6:06 the following morning.
Effects on regional traffic
To avoid a conflict in track occupation, on Saturdays the R16030 regional service departing from Bolzano/Bozen at 5:27 and going towards Fortezza/Franzensfeste will be suspended.
Please note: Südtirol Passes as well as other südtirolmobil tickets and subscriptions are not valid on this Intercity Night service.
